![]() ![]() In addition to the natural beauty of the desert, many locations also offer the opportunity to capture images of ancient ruins, traditional architecture, and indigenous cultures. By carefully framing the scene and using elements in the foreground, mid-ground, and background, I'm able to create images that convey a sense of depth and scale. To do this, I often use wide-angle lenses and creative composition techniques such as leading lines, framing, and patterns. One of the most challenging aspects of desert photography is capturing the vastness and scale of the landscape. However, some landscapes, such as sand dunes, can also offer unique photo opportunities during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. Early morning and late afternoon are ideal for creating dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. When choosing a location for desert photography, it is important to research the area beforehand and plan for the best time of day to capture the lighting conditions. The harsh sunlight, strong winds, and dust can pose challenges to equipment, so it is important to protect my gear and keep it clean. A high-quality camera with a range of lenses, a tripod, and a reliable backpack are essential tools for any desert photographer such as myself. To capture stunning desert photographs, a photographer needs to consider several factors, including equipment, lighting, composition, and location. Some legendary rivers in this region include the mighty Colorado River and the Owens River. The term, "desert", doesn't quite accurately describe the American Southwest however as this natural environment is actually alive and well with wildlife, cactus and flora. From the majestic dunes of Death Valley and Mojave Desert of Southern California, to the rugged canyons of the American Southwest with the high desert Colorado Plateau sandstone of Arizona, Nevada and Utah, the desert landscape is one of the most fascinating nature subject locations to explore with a camera. Desert photography is a discipline that requires a keen eye, technical skill, and a sense of adventure. However, for nature photographers, it presents a unique and challenging canvas to capture the beauty of arid landscapes. ![]() The vast expanse of the desert is often perceived as barren, harsh, and inhospitable. As Shainblum continues through his editing he also brings us along by explaining certain choices he is making to bring the image to the forefront of potential that it has. ![]() Shainblum has this conundrum in the very beginning of the video explaining that for his final images he may have spent some considerable time just deciding on the color tonality for a photograph before continuing on with an edit. When deciding the overall color hue of an image keep in mind that can really decide the mood that the viewer will perceive. This type of direction in the editing process gives a great set of objectives to really begin with and adhere to when editing a new image and if you find the edit didn’t go where you wanted, you can decide to re-edit and change course where that specific objective previously started to veer off.
